DevKit 3.1: File revisions, a safer Sync and WP Config

DevKit 3.1 brings revisions to the File Manager, a much safer Sync, and a new WP Config screen.

File Manager revisions

Before you change a file, open Revisions in the editor and save a restore point with a title, for example "before header change". A revision is taken from the file on disk, so you can keep a working version and experiment freely.

  • Compare any revision with what is in the editor right now, side by side.
  • Restore puts the file back to that revision. DevKit asks first and reminds you to save a revision of the current state if you want to keep it.
  • Duplicate or Delete revisions you no longer need.
  • Up to 20 revisions are kept per file (files up to 2 MB). They are stored in DevKit's protected backup folder, never where a browser can open them.
  • If a PHP save takes the site down and Show DevKit Error Screen is on (DevKit → Settings), the error page has a Recover File link that puts back the file as it was before the save.

Safer Sync

  • Sync copies uploads first, then plugins and themes, then the database. A plugin only becomes active once all its files are there.
  • Each plugin and theme folder is copied aside and swapped in whole, so a site never runs a half-copied plugin, not even for a moment.
  • If a pull fails after the database was (even partly) replaced, DevKit restores those tables from the safety backup and removes the tables the pull added.
  • Sites whose salts are not in wp-config.php (every WordPress Studio site) now sync and stay logged in.
  • A new read-only key lets a site be pulled from while it refuses pushes.

WP Config

Turn WordPress constants on and off without opening wp-config.php: DISABLE_WP_CRON, DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT, CORE_UPGRADE_SKIP_NEW_BUNDLED and more. Each switch saves itself and writes the line into wp-config.php. A constant that is set somewhere else is shown locked, so DevKit never claims a value it doesn't control.

Also new

  • Users Manager: edit username, email and role inline. Users Manager docs →
  • Base64 tool: data URIs, CSS backgrounds, @font-face, batch mode for a whole stylesheet, SVG optimisation and image resize before encoding. Plus URL Encode/Decode, HTML Entities and Hex/Binary/Text.

Fixes

  • Sync no longer fails with "The stored connection secret could not be read." on sites with placeholder salts.
  • On SQLite sites, a backup of a site running Wordfence could run forever and fill the disk.
  • Files containing SLASH (like JSON_UNESCAPED_SLASHES) were corrupted when saved in the File Manager.
  • The File Manager's old .bak copies, wp-config.php included, could be served by the web server; DevKit now removes them.
  • A database error or a full disk during a backup now fails the backup instead of reporting success.
  • Plugins Disabler could permanently deactivate a disabled plugin when another plugin saved the plugin list.
  • URL migration no longer doubles the port.
